VOICES

In English, we use different “voices” to talk about actions. There are two main voices: active voice and passive voice. Understanding these voices helps you see how sentences are made and who is doing what.

Categories and Examples

1. Active Voice

  • Definition: The subject of the sentence does the action.
  • Structure: Subject + Verb + Object
  • Examples:
    • “The cat (subject) chases (verb) the mouse (object).”
    • “Sara (subject) writes (verb) a letter (object).”

2. Passive Voice

  • Definition: The action is done to the subject of the sentence.
  • Structure: Subject + Form of “to be” + Past Participle + (by + Agent)
  • Examples:
    • “The mouse (subject) is chased (verb) by the cat (agent).”
    • “A letter (subject) is written (verb) by Sara (agent).”
