VOICES
In English, we use different “voices” to talk about actions. There are two main voices: active voice and passive voice. Understanding these voices helps you see how sentences are made and who is doing what.
Categories and Examples
1. Active Voice
- Definition: The subject of the sentence does the action.
- Structure: Subject + Verb + Object
- Examples:
- “The cat (subject) chases (verb) the mouse (object).”
- “Sara (subject) writes (verb) a letter (object).”
2. Passive Voice
- Definition: The action is done to the subject of the sentence.
- Structure: Subject + Form of “to be” + Past Participle + (by + Agent)
- Examples:
- “The mouse (subject) is chased (verb) by the cat (agent).”
- “A letter (subject) is written (verb) by Sara (agent).”
