Short and Long Vowels

VOWELS: A, E, I, O and U

SHORT: When there is one vowel in a word, it usually has the short vowel sound. For example:

A: ant, cap, glass, lamp
E: egg, bed, west, smell
I: igloo, tip, sit, swim
O: octopus, hop, stop, fox
U: umbrella, cub, cut, puff, jump

LONG: When a word has two vowels, usually the first vowel says its name and the second vowel is silent. For example:

A: mail, tail, name, game, gate, tape
E: sea, teach, free, hear, key, sheep
I: island, hike, bike, fire, pie, size
O: oak, home, stone, foam, boat
U: June, juice, clue, chew, blue
